Description

The Piano Sonata in D major, D 850, sometimes referred to as the “Gastein Sonata” after the place where it was composed, numbers among the few sonatas that Franz Schubert was able to publish during his lifetime. The first edition was issued in 1826 by the Viennese Artaria publishing house. It was thus authorised by Schubert but displays numerous inaccuracies. Fortunately, the autograph has been preserved. It was able to be used as an important secondary source for the new Henle Urtext edition. The comments-section provides information about the significant differences between the two sources, while the preface by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl offers enlightening insights into the genesis of the work.
This piano sonata, by far Schubert’s longest, and its four movements confront the performer with great technical challenges. The sophisticated fingerings of the renowned Schubert interpreter Martin Helmchen offer ideal support here.
