Schubert was visibly adventurous in his early piano sonatas, as is apparent in their wide-ranging key schemes, diverging versions of many movements or entire sonatas, and numerous works left incomplete. This revised Urtext edition contains the sonatas he composed between 1815 and 1817. An updated preface and valuable notes on central questions of performance practice (e.g. articulation, pedalling and embellishments), with a special emphasis on his idiosyncratic treatment of accent-like diminuendo hairpins, form a useful introduction to the sonatas. Description

Schubert’s piano sonatas written between 1818 and 1825 comprise four completed and five unfinished works. His breakthrough came with the Sonata in C major D 840, known as the “Reliquie”, the Sonata in A minor D 845, printed in 1826 entitled “Première Grande Sonate” – and as such the first sonata of Schubert that was published – and the Sonata in D major D 850. H. G. Nägeli wrote enthusiastically to Czerny a short time later: “I definitely count the piano composer Schubert among the good, even excellent ones”.

With the publication of the Middle Sonatas, the three-volume Bärenreiter Urtext edition of Schubert’s piano sonatas is now complete. Volume III of Schubert’s Piano Sonatas includes the tuneful, dance-like Sonata in G major D 894 (1827), sometimes called the “Fantasie” sonata, as well as the three great sonatas in C minor, A major and B-flat major (D 958, 959 and 960), which were conceived as a triptych and constitute the composer’s greatest contribution to the piano sonata genre. The works pay homage to the three late sonatas of Beethoven.
