Description

The few concertante works which Schubert left behind stem from special occasions. A violin concerto was unfortunately not among them – although there is a brilliant Rondo in A major for violin and string orchestra, which even today still enjoys great popularity. Composed in June 1816, it belongs to a small group of works which Schubert wrote for performance in Vienna’s orphanage, with his brother Ferdinand, an accomplished violinist, appearing as soloist. The work, consisting of a slow introduction and an extensive Allegro, was first published in 1897. It offers surprising twists in expression and harmony and has a challenging solo part, which is nevertheless manageable even for advanced amateurs. This reference edition is at last available as a Henle Urtext!
