Description

With the triad of his last Piano Sonatas in c minor, A major and B-flat major, Franz Schubert crowned his life’s work in September 1828, just two months before his death. Already in 1838, Robert Schumann described their special status as Schubert’s compositional legacy – today, these three great sonatas number among the most important contributions to this genre.
The C-minor Sonata appeared in print only posthumously in 1838, so that for the present Urtext edition only the autograph sources (draft and fair copy) were taken into account. The comments provide information on ambiguous casesand important differences between the sources, while the preface by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl conveys insights into the work’s genesis. For coping with the technically very demanding C-minor Sonata, which combines dramatic outbursts with moments of the utmost intimacy, the fingering provided by renowned Schubert interpreter Martin Helmchen offer ideal guidance.
